I tried it on and really was convinced I had just created a denim sack. And, as you can see, it wasn't so different with a hem but nonetheless I love it. A lady also stopped me in the street to say how much she loved it which is always good! The hem is slightly shaped which is a nice detail and whilst oversized (I made a 38, would normally make a 40 at the moment) it does have a cocoon shape which is pretty trendy at the moment. It also hides all your lumps and bumps, hangs away from the body so is cool to wear in summer and with the pockets is super comfortable and relaxed.

I have had the idea of combining some kantha stitched patchwork fabric I have with denim for an absolute age and finally I have. The pattern appeared on Burda Style here and Spotlight opened in Busselton so I bustled in on opening weekend and nabbed a couple of meters of light weight denim. The kantha quilted fabric is beautiful and I also lined the sleeves and faced the hem in it. Its made from recycled saris and covered in fine running stitch. It was also my 1st go at piping since I made a a Laura Ashley log cabin patchwork cushion in school needlework aged 15 but it seemed to go OK. I omitted the back seam and sewed the zip in after a margarita or two hence, like I was, it's a bit squiffy.

My only complaint is that the sleeve design doesn't allow a huge range of arm movement but maybe that just means you have to hang your washing on the line another day! I photographed this dress after wearing it for about 3 days, a bit creased but not too bad so maybe I can avoid the washing for a while.

Its been over a year I know... I haven't stopped sewing, in fact I've made lots of things that I am really pleased with and wear A LOT. I've even taken some photos but somehow they haven't made it to here. But yesterday I found myself at the beach in a relatively recent make, so here we are.

This is the hole back dress 116 from Burda Style 08/14. I had this viscose that I had brought in Spotlight in the sale about 3 years ago and it had been waiting for a project with the required amount of drape. Luckily I washed it before as it shrank LOTS and I had to do a bit of figuring out to get all the pattern pieces on.

I absolutely love the skirt on this, its full at the back and swishes about beautifully and blows in the wind but the front is shorter flattering length. I am just not so sure about the bodice. The neckline is a bit too square. The shoulders give quite a nice cap sleeve type effect. I decided to lengthen the bodice 5 cm as I prefer a slightly lower waist. I should also have lowered the darts as they are almost exactly 5cm too high and create a bit of a pull across my upper bust. Not sure I would lengthen it so much if I made it again as it sits strangely at the front but hey ho. It also probably made the hole at the back smaller but that seems ok to me.

The other major excitement is that I discovered my machine's rolled hem foot and used it to sew the long hem. It worked a treat and was really very easy and much much quicker than it would have been otherwise. It made it a bit wavy (not sure how to adjust this) but that was perfect with the style of skirt.

Its not my most successful dress but it is easy to pull on and wear and has a nice summery relaxed feel. I really love the fabric and would like to find some other nice printed rayon/viscose but have not found anything similar in spotty since.

See you again a bit sooner!Lucy Leggethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13104866158508481940noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2289051787130774776.post-34282258152065535132013-08-22T23:58:00.001-07:002013-08-22T23:58:36.091-07:00ClassesWow, time has flown by. I finished teaching my 1st set of classes in early July and its now late August. Eeekk. It was a lot of fun. We got to cosy up in the Country Women's rooms in Dunsborough, eat cake and, importantly, make skirts. The pattern I chose for the class was a great beginners one Megan Neilsen's Kelly Skirt. Its a great one because it only has one important measurement which is the waist. It's simple to sew with lots of straight bits but also some intersting things like pockets, pleats and button holes and the finished object is pretty stylish too.

Everyone was so excited by the pockets, its really the 1st thing you make and when they realised that they had put in 2 nicely shaped pockets there were lots of smiles. Button holes too went pretty well. I did lots of revision and practice before hand and am now also much better at them than I was before!!!

I learnt many other things too.... like it takes 10 hours to teach a class to make this skirt and finish it not 7 and a half. Pleats also caused us a few headaches. Not that they are hard to put in but that everyone needed up with skirts that were too long around the waist and so the waistband only just fitted (and was maybe a bit big finished). I think for next time I will get everyone to hand tack them and check the waistband length before machine basting in place. Its also really interesting to see what what beginners really need to know, what's too much and of course those things you think are obvious but totally aren't when you 1st start.

I had such a nice 1st group and three and a half finished skirts out of four. Erin couldn't make the last lesson but I know she's brought herself a sewing machine after using mine to do the course so I think its out there somewhere! Here are few pics....
And here's a picture of me that I'm using for my facebook page for the classes. I've cut my fringe. I know you can tell I did it by that kink. Well actually my husband did it but I can't be blaming him. I haven't had one for years but I like it. Look a bit crazed here, hopefully it won't put everyone off!
More classes coming soon but I need to work out exactly when as I have started going to some too.

Yay, I'm so excited. I'm into week 2 of pattern cutting evening classes at Bunbury TAFE. I accidentally happened upon an advertisement for them, enquired and was told there weren't enough people............. then there were and there I am. yey.

We are doing skirt and bodice blocks, styles, grading and all sorts. I was amazed how well my skirt block fit - of course it would I guess. I've done bits of it before and read lots so its not all totally new but it really does make a huge difference to actually do it in practice and have someone teach you, show you how its properly done and answer your questions. I love learning anything really but to be able to learn this which I have been wanting to do for ages is a real priveledge. A do you know what? Its not that hard either (she says after only 2 weeks and some VERY basic styles). I think I will be making patterns for a lot more things myself.

Next up I'm off to do a day of natural dyeing in September. After a quiet winter its all happening. Feels good.

Not something I do much of, I always think of it as going on kids clothes or quilts. No reason it has to be like that but I've never put any on anything for me. No change there, I just made some seat covers and kids clothes!

I picked up 3 lovely directors chairs in the tip for $5 when we were dropping something else off. (Is it only me that always comes back with more than I take?) Nothing wrong with these just the seats were a bit ripped and mouldy and the wood needed some TLC. I couldn't leave them behind. They sat in the garage for about 8 months and then one drizzly saturday morning I just decided to get on and oil them.

I sanded them lightly and then brushed on organ oil which got rapidly soaked up. It was an amazing transformation, they went from looking pale, worn and sorry for themselves to chic and shipshape just like that.

Small one didn't want to miss out on any painting action so had a go on her new climbing frame her dad had just built.

Next to the covers. I had a large length of denim from the op shop, I'd had it in mind for these so just needed to get going. I measured the old covers and reduced the size a bit to allow for stretch. Then I did some applique feathers on the top just to add a bit of interest. I had some fancy interfacing stuff that sticks on both sides that I brought ages ago, the feather template was on the instruction sheet of something I made out of Burda Style and it had stuck in my memory. Easy. Sew around the edge with small zigzag, and running stitch embroidery down the middle whilst watching TV.

I'm totally pleased with them, but also pleased not to have to sew more straight lines for a bit!
A present from their Grandma. I tried my hand too. Skye had been walking about with the lion Fabric for a couple of days, she even took it to bed, so I took pity and made her a paper bag skirt with a little lion on the big pocket. I just made the pattern up, very easy, a slightly sloped rectangle with elastic! In the photo its just come out of the wash, it could do with an iron but it probably won't get one.

Life and things got in the way. But finally ............I present my 2 new pairs of pyjama bottoms!!! Both of these pairs of trousers rescued otherwise unwearbale tops from the op shop and transformed them into pretty cute pyjama tops. They only get seen under cover of darkness (by me and my nearest and dearest) so the obvious reasons I didn't really like wearing the tops out become unimportant and it seems pyjamas have different style rules which mean they are just fine. I now have 2 sets of PJs that get lots and lots of wear.

1st up lets meet the karate/curtains/kung-fu/chintz pair. I really am not sure what I was thinking when I made this top. I did originally buy the fabric for a nightie or pyjamas but then decided to make a kimono top. Its kind of ok and it did get worn out once - the day I made it of course. But the sleeves are huge and show your bra and the print whilst very pretty and a lovely soft voile is really not my style and, well, doesn't go so well with the design. Its pattern 121 from Burda Style 06/11.

Back to plan A. Bra showing is obviously no longer an issue if I'm not wearing one! I had more of the same fabric and trim so enter a PJ bottom pattern from Burda 12/2007 (which incidentally has a much better looking kimono style top). I have sepia-ed up these pics as it was all a bit harsh with the night time flash photography. You can see the real colours in the last pic below.
Next up a stripey vintage sheet pair. Quite reminiscent mens PJS (although maybe not in pink). They tone down the sweetness of the top. I made this one when I was pregnant, (in fact I notice I posted about it 2 days before giving birth!) It kind of worked ok for that although really the material was not drapey enough. I tried cutting off the frilly sleeves to improve it and thought about shortening it but it didn't seem worth the effort. Its one major merit was its extreme comfort (and of course its downside in that it looks a bit like a sack) so pyjamas it became. I used the same pattern.
These were bottoms were obviously not complicated to make but were something I'd been meaning to do for ages and kept putting off. I think I knocked them both out in one evening. Thank you to Karen, her pyjama party gave me the push to finally do it. Two otherwise unloved items are now earning their keep.Lucy Leggethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13104866158508481940noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2289051787130774776.post-73520241482734467122013-07-15T02:28:00.003-07:002013-07-15T02:29:02.181-07:00It's just pants! My computer has blown up, which is pretty pants, which means I haven't done some of the posts I want to as my photos are stuck on my camera. So here is a little post from my iPhone. Life not actually too pants although we have been having a bit of mid winter blues. We reckoned that being from the northern hemisphere we would normally have Christmas to break up winter but over here we don't have any fun celebrations to so it feels super long. So to lighten the mood I knocked out a quick fun project using some small amounts of things from my stores.

Yes pants! Yey. Made using Zoe's free pattern, a metre or 2 of knicker elastic from my large store ( 2 big bags $5 at Albany auctions), and some scrap jersey from a dress I made. I made 2 pairs, using blue and pink elastic to go with the grey fabric.

For the blue ones I added a small seam allowance so the leg and waist sides as the pattern is designed for fold over elastic and mine is just traditional knicker elastic (even though you do fold it over in the process of sewing it on). The pink ones I left as is and I prefer these although the difference is minimal. Only thing I would change would be to make sure I put a bit more tension on my waist elastic as I sewed it on. They aren't falling down but more would feel better I think. I sewed the elastic on 1st with a normal zigzag and once I had turned it over with a 3 step zigzag, a stitch I love on knit fabric.

My over locker's timing has ******ed up again so its out of action until I feel rich or desperate enough to get it fixed. Booo. It wouldn't have made any difference to making these but it is making me hesitate to start some other projects (well its my most recent excuse for not making trousers with a front fly!!)

Anyway these pants/knickers/undies are great, super comfy and M&S may not get any more business from me (yes despite living in oz for 4 years now my mum still sends me parcels of my favourite M&S boy leg shorts.) Infact next mission must surely be to trace a pair of these.
This coat started life as a blanket. I think it started that life quite a long time ago. It was made in the Albany Woollen Mills, now no longer there. I don't know when they closed down but I am imagining sometime in the 80s. I like that this coat has had a long life before and that it was originally made relatively locally. I cut the label off the corner of the blanket and hand stitched it into the coat.

I made the this pattern from Burda Style 10/2012. I made my usual size 12 (38) and it seems to fit pretty well. I left out the inseam pockets as I thought that some on the front would look better. I'm still planning to put in some welt pockets as I keep reaching down to put my hands in them only to find I haven't made them yet! My excuse is that it was very cold and I just had to start wearing the coat. I also brought a couple of buttons as I planned to put one or 2 on to hold it together rather than just the belt. I still haven't put them on as I wasn't sure I wanted to have a big button hole (or a snap) on the collar when I didn't have it fully buttoned up. My compromise is a kilt pin.

I hand stitched the blanket stitch all the way around, using some tapestry wool I got for $1 at the market. It was quite therapeutic really and a just took me a couple of evenings in front of the TV. I'm actually really pleased with it. It kept me warm at the same time too. Initially I had planned to do 2 or 3 rows of running stitch just inside too but in the end I didn't want to overdo the crafty-ness of it.

I think though that the fact that it does still look quite like a blanket is what has got me so many compliments about it. I thought it was reltively ordinary but I guess its quite unusual and the fact that it does look handmade does make people comment on it. I have even had a couple of requests for copies.

Its not lined as you can see so its a relatively easy make. I did flat fell seams, with a raw edge where I could and I like the rustic look of these.

It was a warm sunny lunch time when I photographed this but its been a wonderful coat for the chilly mornings and evenings. So with the sun shining, a cosy coat for when it isn't and at a total cost of $6 for materials I really have nothing left to complain about!Lucy Leggethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13104866158508481940noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2289051787130774776.post-80362788885278069582013-06-11T06:18:00.001-07:002013-06-11T06:19:07.351-07:00Me Made May the end (including my new Briar)

Here are a last few photos from Me Made May. I think you've seen most of thse outfits before so I won't dwell on them. This top photo is from Skye's 3rd birthday where I wore my Roxanne top. It was a lovely sunny day and I originally started out wearing my favourite Chloe dress. For some reason I decided it would be a good idea to turn my compost heap and got my fork handle stuck in the pocket and as I thrust it into the compost I heard an ominous ripping sound. I had torn my dress all along the front seam by the pocket. Booooooo.

I can fix it of course. I've got more of the flowery fabric and have cut out a new welt pocket piece already, I just need to get the motivation to sew it. I don't know why I am so bad about actually sitting down and doing repairs even to my favourite dress!

My wrap top works nicely with dresses too and I don't have to worry about it riding up (which it has a bit of a tendency to do) and reveal my midriff.

Talking of midriffs I made a Briar. I'm thinking that I'd like to teach a class about sewing knits and thought this would be a good base pattern. Slightly counterintuitively I decided to make the length I thought least likely to suit me to see how it worked. I had a piece of natural cotton jersey, again from the op shop. Enough to make this although I had to shorten the sleeves. I cut a size medium (compared to a large for my Kelly Skirt). The fit seems pretty good. If I was making this length again I think I would add just an inch or two to it as I'd like it to end a little bit further below my bust, probably so that I there was no gap between a high waisted item like this Kelly skirt and the tshirt.
Its a great T shirt (the slight whiff of moth balls cured by a trip to the washing machine) and I already have plans for 2 long versions swimming around in my head.

The next day I wore it as a jumper over jeans and a shirt. In his usual fashion my husband asked what had happened to the bottom of my t shirt!

I totally love this pink shirt i am wearing it with. Its liberty cotton and it fits so well even though its constructed with no darts. My normal problem with conventional shirts is gaping around the buttons but with this one there is none of this. Combined with the beautiful print and lovely silkyness of the liberty lawn this one of my favourite shirts. Alas I didn't make it but for $5 in a garage sale I can't complain!

So my main lesson from this last month was that once the weather starts to cool down my staple wardrobe of me made summer dresses get put away, my jeans come on and they don't really come off! I have quite a lot of tops to wear but I could do with making some more outerwear as well as a few winter dresses. Other than that its just nice to wear some of those things in my wardrobe that I didn't make but that I still love. I'm enjoying June!Lucy Leggethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13104866158508481940noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2289051787130774776.post-61488287946226658702013-06-10T06:11:00.000-07:002013-06-11T06:19:15.731-07:00Cosy Cardi

It's lovely and warm and cosy and, in that, it seems to be all I'm after in an item of clothing these days! I brought this fabric at the local markets from a lady that sells (obviously) pieces of second hand fabrics, haberdashery bits and bobs as well as a rather good selection of second hand books. I think this set me back $4.50 for a meter and a half of boiled wool type jersey. One side looks just like boiled wool, the other like jersey. Not sure which side is meant to be the right one but I went for the bobbly side. It stretches like astable jersey.

Cosy and content

I spent a bit of time prowling the interwebs for a suitable pattern but didn't find anything I really liked. Then I stumbled on a few tutiorials and looked at cardi I already had. In the end I decided it would be easiest to draft a pattern from a top I already had. I used the long sleeved black T shirt that I'm wearing underneath. Infact it was very easy and I wonder why I didn't think of this earlier.

On the front I just curved the neckline down from the shoulder to the centre front at the bottom. Then I cut two 30cm wide pieces (each the length of half the front) sewed them together and attached them as the collar. The width was decided by a small hole in the fabric meaning 30cm was all I could fit in. I think it works pretty well. If I was to do it again I think I might curve the centre back seam of the collar so that it rolls over more softly, although it works ok as it is. The collar and front are really nice to wrap around you and snuggle in.

I did the shoulder seams inside out and sewed the seam allowances down with a zigzag stitch. Other seams were the normal way out but also sewn down on either side with a zigzag. I feel like the zigzags add a bit more structure and make it look a little more jacket like. I left the hem and neck unhemmed. My husband keeps asking when I'm going to finish it but I think its fine.

My hair looks a bit crazy but as I said I'm warm. I've worn it lots. I like the colour, infact I seems to have sewn a few things in different colours (for me) but which all go toghether really well.

I like the shawl/scarf like collar. I was considering a more waterfall one which seems to consist of curtting a big rectangle extra on each front piece. In the end I didn't think it would be so warm for this cardi but I do have some thickish white jersey that I might try one from.

One thing I did learn from Me Made May (final post sometime soon) was that I mainly wear jeans in winter and I was lacking many warm things to go with them. Here's solution number one!

The list includes... 2 pairs of pyjama bottoms, a coat/cardi, a big wool coat (nearly finished), 2 little waistcoats and a Briar.

Here are the 2 waistcoats.

I am so pleased with them. I can't decide if they are more Fred Flinstone or Footballers Wife? On my children they're probably veering to the caveman side of things, given nothing stays clean that long and they never look that groomed (the kids not the coats)! Also incredibly pleasing is the fact that the pair of them cost me less than $2 total (the coats not the kids). I found 4 remnants of the fur in the op shop for $1.50. I don't know what got me to buy it but I just saw it and was sure I could get 2 little waistcoats out of it. The linings are remnants of old vintage sheets that I had already used for other makes (my Chloe and an unblogged top for my mum), the buttons were in my jar (20c the two - op shop of course) and the pattern was from Burda Style 10/12. The pattern originally had a hood but I didn't have enough fur and thought the weight might also pull the waistcoat off the little people's shoulders. I sewed them up immediately as I knew the fur wouldn't have many other uses and I wanted to make them before another project stole my attention and inspiration.

I made sizes 104 and 98 (pictured)

My small one rocking the cave woman look, complete with uggs. Poor girl, styled by her mum and feeling a bit ill too.

I've made a few little girls clothes that I haven't blogged about but I seem to have captured them in some photos so thought you might like to see them. The 1st one is a 60s style dress with patch pockets on the front. I made a size 104 which is a bit big but hopefully it will fit for a while. Its made out of the same lovely soft stretchy cotton as my spotty shorts. Pictured here covered with flour after a bread baking session with Dad. The pattern is from Burda Style 09/12.

The pockets work.

You can just spot the other tunic top, also from Burda 09/12 which has lovely puffy bottoms to the sleeves. This one is made from some quilting material I brough when I first started sewing again. I love the print, some how I cut out the 1st front with the pattern off centre but luckily I had enough to cut another as it would have bugged me all the time.

Other seriously exciting news is that I won the Tessuti birthday give away!!!! Yey me. I was thinking that I had entered a few giveaways and sometime one of the random picks should randomly pick me. I mean some giveaways are popular but its not lottery type odds. Nonetheless I was pretty flabberghasted when I found that I actually had won one, and one with such a great gift as well.

Soon after seven meters of lovely linen found their way to me. I've got 1.5m of the blue and pink which are both lighter weight and 2 m of each of the white and beige which are a bit heavier. I am thinking a buttion up shirt in the pink and maybe some type of tunic/smock top in the blue? Maybe a Tova or Tessuti's Mia tunic - we shall see. What about the others? A dress, some wide leg pants? Does anyone have any good ideas or suggestions for patterns? A great dilemma to have.

Day 13

This was the day I wore my Kelly and managed to get some photos for last weeks post.

Wearing my fancy raglan sleeved T. Its a good one.

Unfortunately I didn't grow those seedlings although a few of mine have started to come up.

Day 15

Well we got off to a bad start when I got wee (not my own I hasten to add) on my first outfit of the day, before I had a chance to photograph it. It was Burda Jersey dress picured at the bottom of this post. Worn with boots and a cosy merino polo neck underneath.

Day 16

In managed to wear 4 things I had made - jumper, hat and two gloves. Yey. I was nice and cosy too, must find time to do some knitting too!!??

Day 17

My nice refashion. The lace top obscured by the poloneck but it was *****y freezinng especailly standing around waiting for a bus, really needed more than a poloneck. I think I must be turning into an Aussie as I seem totally unprepared for cold weather, amazing what you can forget in 4 years!

The weekend AKA Day 18 & 19

Not sure what happened here or why no photos - think I just wore me made tshirts under thick jumpers....or maybe just my knickers. No, not just my knickers its far too chilly and a photo of that would not have appeared, not that i did...... but anyway I have made a nice pair of Emmersons that I wear often. I have also worn my 2 new sets of pyjamas lots so will attempt to get some photos of them to make up for the weekend lack.

Day 20

Discovered this top in my wardrobe. I'm not wild abou it, its just not that flattering even though I love the fabric and the trim. I much prefer the dress I made using this pattern. Nonetheless I felt very comfortable all day in this outfit.

Day 21

Well it worked ok yesterday so why not wear the same thing with a different top today. I really do like this tank top.

Day 22

My lola again. I was obviously feeling bright this morning. Kept me cheerful anyway.

And that's it for this week. One week to go and I'm wondering what new outfits I can put together...stay tuned.Lucy Leggethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13104866158508481940noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2289051787130774776.post-85401725849106937312013-05-15T08:41:00.002-07:002013-05-15T08:43:08.455-07:00Curtain Kelly Skirt

So here's my new Kelly Skirt. Yey. It started life as a curtain brought at the op shop about 3 years ago. I loved the print but its been waiting around for the right pattern and here it is. I love how it turned out. Most of the Kelly's I've seen have been plain but I think it works brilliantly in a pattern too. Its a nice heavy cotton drill which holds its shape really well.

Here are the nice back pleats which fall at just the right point of your bottom to make it super flattering. You can see the pockets too which are great for putting your phone or hands in. Might seem obvious really but not all pockets are created equal!

I would normally go for skirts or shorts that would sit on my hips. This is definitely a high waister but I like it. The waistband is wise enough to give it a good solid feeling. You can wear a big belt over it, tuck your top in or have it out. I made a size large and it fits absolutely perfectly.

This pattern is super simple to make. I have to confess I am actually really amazed that something so simple can turn into something so stylish. Simple as it is, its obvious a lot of thought and care has gone into its design and its little things like the width of the waist band, placement of the pleats and shape of the pockets that let you know that a give you a great versatile skirt (well less versatile when you make it in big yellow flowers but hey!).

I followed the instruction to a tee and it came together really well. I have to confess I have not sewn many button holes before but a few practices and 7 later I had got the hang of them, my only problem was that I didn't make the 1st few wide enough, being scared of making them too big. A fine balance!

Other really exciting news is that I have had a really positive reception to the sewing workshops I am starting in June. We are going to be sewing...... a Kelly Skirt of course. I am super excited that I will get to spend some time with 6 lovely ladies who all want to sew and that I can share some of what I have learnt over the past few years. I hope that I can inspire a love of making clothes in my students and at the least get them walking away with a skirt they like and will be happy to wear! So thank you to everyone who has been so supportive, including the lovely Megan Nielsen of course. I think deciding on using this pattern really helped to get these going and I really like that everyone will be learning with a pattern from (sewing)world famous local lady.

Keep your eyes peeled for Kellys if you find yourself in Dunsborough in July!

Day 10

I'm realising that I really need some other bottom halves and long sleeved dresses and tops if I am to make it through the month feeling warm. My me made wardrobe is definitely weighted towards summer. On Friday I wore my pleated skirt with a nice cosy cashmere jumper (not knitted by me).

The pleat makes it great for cycling.

Day 11

Another cold day which started off warmer. I should have taken a photo early on. I looked neat and quite chic and had a great necklace on and no coffee down my front! Here I am standing in a field, looking a bit bedragled with coffee spilt down my front, and no necklace, wondering if we can get the photo done before it pours with rain. Warmer jumper promptly put on over the top and not removed until bedtime. Wearing my peplum top and my favourite pair of red boots which didn't make it into a photo.

Day 12

There is a new climbing wall in town, we've been a few times, its lots of fun so we got to go again for mother's day. I wore a red kimono sleeved T shirt made by me but not blogged. I adapted a vintage woven pattern for this. Its useful, practical and I really like the scoop neckline I drafted. All in all pretty good. Today I have very tiff back and shoulders!

That's all for the moment.
See you soon.

The weather has turned wild wet and windy and this has limited my options somewhat. My sewing wardrobe is heavily swayed towards summer dresses and tops but nonetheless I've found a few things to wear.

Day 1

Tie necked summer blouse. One of the 1st few things I made when I discovered Burda Magazine in the Library (then I got the magazine for 20c when they sold it on. Bargain!). Its a pretty top but I don't wear it often, I think I am going to shorten it as the long length means I need to tuck it in.

Day 2

The colder weather continued so I pulled on my fleece. I've not blogged about this one but it's an adaptation of Victory patterns Lola dress. Shorter obviously, with a pocket added in the middle and longer sleeves. I also added a turtleneck type collar made out of ribbing. I initially brought the white fleece to make one for my wedding as we planned to paraglide off after our ceremony. We did fly off the hill we got married on but I didn't make the fleece in time. This fleece is super cosy and even though the colour isn't super practical I wear it often.

I was also wearing a me made red dolman sleeve t shirt underneath but didn't get a photo.

Day 3

I wore my new Kelly Skirt (and green raglan T). I love it but didn't get any photos as I was feeling ill and grotty and my chief photographer was off finishing off his Permaculture Design Course. Will post about it soon.

Day 4

We headed down to Fair Harvest in Margaret River where The Husband was finishing his course. We hung out round the fire, drinking coffee and eating home made bread (me), visiting the chooks and geese (kids) and met some very lovely people (all of us). Practicality was the name of the game and I wore my fleece again and my blue liberty tank.
Day 5

Well I wore the same clothes again, we had been camping after all. Here I am back at home with the only squash I managed to grow this year. I'm pretty pleased with it none the less. What shall I make with it?
Day 6

A white linen tunic that I made when I was in my early 20s. I like it and its held up well. This is probably because being white and linen it requires washing often and then a good iron. Neither of these happen that often round here.... hence the crinkly look, this is its second day of wear I wore it last week too and thought it would do another day. Its lovely heavy high quality linen. I am also really pleased with the neat finish I achieved with this. It was Burda Pattern and its a size 14 so a little big but it works ok in this tunic style.
You will notice I wear my jeans A LOT if I am not wearing a dress. I must start thinking about the other part of my pledge which was to make some trousers. Stay tuned. It was a bit of a spur of the moment thing, planned just a week or two before. I've done lots of mountain walking but not lots of the crampon/rope stuff and I wasn't feeling very fit BUT you have to grab these chances when they come along. We climbed to the 1st hut the night before - lots of snoring in the dorm and nerves meant no sleep, then up before dawn to set off. I have never been so cold in all my life or so glad when the sun came up over the top. I still can't believe I walked along that knife edge ridge to the summit with 1000s of meters to fall on either side. It was howling a gale on top. We got warmer as we went down and then it turned into an absolutely beautiful day. Liebster award seems to say that I should nominate 10 bloggers I like

So many of her makes are things I would think to make or wear. She also seems to share my penchant for op shops and has lots of great upcycling ideas. Fab photos too.

Julie at joliesbobines. An absolutely beautiful blog - her clothes and her pictures are amazing. Its in French but if you can't read it don't worry it would still be great inspiration. She probably has many more followers now after being featured on Colette's blog.

Cathy at Treadling in Benin. Cathy makes all her lovely clothes on a treadle machine whilst working for peace corps in West Africa. Her posts all have really interesting stories about life there, her clothes are fun, in great fabrics and she tries out lots of techniques. Her photos are lots of fun too.
I think she gets her burda magazines about a month before mine arrive but she often picks out the same things that i would so I always look to see what she's done. I have yet to do any sports gear but thinking about it (maybe need to do sport 1st!).

Its from Burda Style Febuary 13. I am just waiting for the buttons to arrive in the post for my Kelly skirt so wanted something to fill the hole(s... there will be 7 buttons) while I wait. I got this jersey for $1 in the op shop. It actually matches one of the colours in my Kelly skirt to be, I have a shortage of long sleeved winter Ts and I had the pattern already traced so a bit of an easy/lazy choice. Its just plain green cotton jersey, quite a bit thicker and much less stretchy than the fabric in the grey one. Lazy (or only 1/2 my brain on) seemed to be a bit of a theme.

It ain't perfect but it works well enough. I had one of those sort of mind blanks where whilst I remembered that the last time I made it I had cut the neckband shorter, because it seemed to be the same length as the opening, I didn't do it this time! Some sort of muttering in my head about it being less stretchy but all the time I really knew I should BUT I didn't. I am really a bit lazy and think I didn't want to faff with my tape measure. Ho hum. As could have been predicted the neck back is a bit loose and gapes a bit, its also slightly irregular around the front. But hey ho I think people that pass me in the street will find many much larger flaws in my general appearance to pull me up about. And well....no one has ever stopped me in the street to criticise either my general appearance or my sewing finish, or even to ask me if I made it in a kind of 'that looks awful you must have made it as you certainly wouldn't buy it' kind of a way so I'm not going to worry. Still it might have been good if I hadn't let my brain do the same at the bottom. When I cut the still too long (despite shortening to the shorter length on the pattern since the last one) bottom off and found one side to be about 2cm shorter than the other. Anyway I folded the cut off bit in half and sewed it on as a band and well obviously it was longer one side than the other..but if I walk with a hunch to the left you won't be able to tell and will be more concerned about my silly walk.

Laziness and wonkiness aside I like it, wore it 2 days in a row and now its in the wash. Where it will probably shrink because of course I was too lazy to have washed the fabric before (well surely the person who had it before and made something out of it would have done?!). I guess most people would probably wash anything they got from the op shop before they wore it, oh well. We'll see.
Good things:

I can be cosy for winter.

A mildly interesting staple.

I have made the pattern twice, whoop whoop, could be a 1st? It must be good.

It only cost $1.

I co-ordinate with the new curtains that I just made for our van, which co-ordinate with the stripes on the side of my caravan..which means that if I make a pair of trousers out fo the same shet I used to make the curtains I will be in full camo.

Slightly Less good things

Bit annoying the pattern is made for a 7ft giant with very long arms.

A mildly interesting staple.

MUST NOT BE LAZY. Even neck lines and hem bands would be a good thing.

I haven't posted the less flattering photos but if I had you would see that if you have a bit of an undefined midriff section (i.e. no waist and some wobble) then its not necessarily the most flattering of tops!

This tank was made from a pattern I drafted from a top my step daughter brought. Hers had a fancy collar a bit reminiscent of my Roxanne top but it was the simple shape and good fit that made me want to make it. This was the second version, made with a piece of Liberty fabric that my parents brought for me for Christmas. It was probably only about 80cm but it was perfect for this.

My 1st version of this had disintegrated (made out of an old skirt, itself made out of a patchwork ofrecycled indonesian fabrics, I had already replaced some of the patches but went a big tear opened up right on my left boob (what do you call them on blogs?) I gave up but knew I had to make another as I wore it a lot.

It fits pretty well but I don't think I copied it perfectly as the pattern isn't quite how it should be, front not as wide as the back etc. The original was not brilliantly made but even so think I have a bit to learn. BUT still it works and I wore this one today...which got me to write the post. I shortened the front a bit to have a bit of a curve rather than be straight across. And I promise last of the beach photos!

I love the colours and the print. In fact I think its really reminiscent of the landscape round here. I put in the picture of the jetty and scrub, taken at the same place (just by Canal Rocks) as I think they compliment it so well.
A different one to my usual, about me and not what I've made. Eekkk.

I'm Lucy (Maud is my middle name) and I seem to have become a bit of
an obsessive sewer. I used to be an obsessive paraglider pilot and I'm
not quite sure how one translated into the other but there you go. It
might have had something to do with moving to a completely flat part of
the world and having 2 children in quick succession. I still fly but
not so much. I've always had a sewing machine and sewn sporadically but
I didn't really start properly until 3 years ago. I found a cheap
machine in the auctions, Burda Style in the library, fabric in op shops
and of course sewing blogs on the net ...... away I went.

Definitely
obsessed, definitely got too much fabric on my shelves and too many
clothes in my wardrobe. In my day job I teach about sustainability. I
totally believe we have to change the way we act and can't possibly
continue to consume like we do....but its hard isn't it? Even sewing
and making, its such a positive thing and as many many blogs have
discussed it makes you realise how stupidly cheap clothes are, how
little people are paid, how little value is placed on the skill, how
disposable fashion has become. In a past life I analysed retail
companies... Inditex (Zara) and H&M so I've seen the drive for
expansion, increasing sales volumes and faster fashion turn around 1st
hand.

But its a bit of a paradox.... for a while there I just wasn't so
interested in fashion any more, but as I sew more I am more interested,
maybe not in slavishly repeating it but certainly a nod - I've made
peplums and hi-lo hems which I probably wouldn't have brought from a
shop. One a refashion and the other recycled material but I'm
definitely buying in to it in my own way. How much material have I
got??? Too much - lots from the op shop but more and more not. How many
vintage patterns, and increasingly new indie ones?....lots and lots.
I'm totally into supporting small independent businesses so this explains this but its nonetheless more than I am likely to make.

I love sewing its
definitely my therapy - I sew in the evenings when my kids are sleeping
and I'm not writing blog posts ; ). My angsts about it don't whirr
constantly around my head and are far outweighed by the positives but I
do wonder how many things I personally need to make myself and where I
will go with my sewing.....

Recently seem to have met so
many people who have a sewing machine but just don't really know how to
use it. People who would like to refashion things but just don't know
how. I'm not a world expert or anything but I realise I do know a lot
about sewing (especially when compared to someone who doesn't know
anything!) and I can teach and more importantly really enjoy teaching.
I've not been doing enough of it at work either so I've got a bit of an
itch there too. I've also realised that I want to take loads of classes
to learn more about sewing, screen-printing, pattern drafting etc. but
they're all in Perth. Well maybe some other people feel that about
learning to sew?

So.........

I've decided
to try running a few evening classes. I'm writing it so I make sure I
make it happen as I am really excited about the idea. I think I have
found a venue and I've been making up a Megan Nielsen Kelly Skirt which I'd like to
use as the pattern for this 1st class. So stay tuned and if you know
anyone who lives in the Dunsborough area who wants a new obsession, a
new skirt and to eat cake with other (would be) sewers then send them my
way.

Off to excitedly do some more planning. Yey.

A blog post needs a photo and as I don't have one of me sitting at my sewing machine here is one of me flying my paraglider in Canungra, near the Coast in QLD. A more photographic hobby I guess!

In other news I have signed up for me-made-may and am really excited about it. Here's my pledge.

I, Lucy of Maudmade sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May ´13. I
endeavour to wear atleast one handmade garment each day for the duration
of May 2013, with no outfit repeats. And to finally sew a pair of
trousers so that I have more bottom options for winter!

Sign up over at So Zo... I am really looking forward to it. Think I'm planning weekly round up posts but more importantly I need to get planning those trousers.
This one is a wrap top from November 12 Burda and a pleated skirt from September 12.

I'll start with the skirt. It was a spur of the moment make, made it an evening as I was waiting for my husband to drive back home from Perth. The timing was perfect as I finished just as he walked in. I had had a big tunic style denim maternity top, originally from Vinnies, and really nice but I had had enough of it and so even though it looked OK as a top post maternity I was over the 'bigness' of it. Loved the soft dark denim though, the big pleat down the front and the big wide hem. I had a recollection of a pleat skirt in Burda, found the super simple pattern, did a quick trace and a cut out and got to sewing.

Reminds me I need to reinforce the top of the pleat!

It came together super easily, I stole a zip out of an old pair of David's work trousers. The only small hiccup was that I thought I had made it too small so stole some seam allowance at the sides and didn't leave enough for my zip to sit properly. Hey ho, I've worn it lots and it hasn't bothered me. Its practical and goes with lots of stuff, easy to move around in and makes a nice change from shorts for casual wear. Infact it got worn the weekend after I made it on a camping trip.
A funny one this can't really work out how I feel about it (not the biggest existential crisis the world has ever faced or anything). I like how it turned out but its not perfect. The waist band has no stretch, and I keep having to pull it down. I cut it out long ways as directed so not sure why this surprised me. The neck too is very low and feels like it doesn't wrap over enough. Thinking about it its obvious that if I lengthened it but didn't increase the wrap then neckline would go lower. Keep wondering if I should unpick it and just sew it further round. I haven't yet but might do. I've worn it a few times, wore it today in fact with my skinny jeans, the bright red cheering me up on a blustery day and the over long sleeves feeling cosy. Its also goes really well as a cardi over a dress (and then don't have to worry about pulling it down and showing mid-drift either.) So its not perfect but it is getting used really quite a lot.

Making the decision to make more practical, comfy and jersey stuff has been really good. A trip to the op shop turned up exactly what I was looking for. A stretchy lace top in a colour that would go with grey. When I got it out at home my husband looked visibly shocked and exclaimed that it was 'hideous' hoping, I assume, to put me off wearing it out of the house the next day. It was a sort of pink stain gathered strappy number with black lace overlay and an exposed black zip down the front. Very trendy I'm sure but luckily for him I was in total agreement as presumably had been the lady that took it to the oppy! Anyway it was exactly what I needed!!! I had a long visocse maxi dress I had got at a garage sale, it had pretty greek style stop but was in fact too big, and too fiddly to adjust. They would go together perfectly.

Our new French Au pair Estelle had appeared a few days earlier in a dusty blue jersey dress with beige lace on the top. It was super pretty but not a thing I would have normally considered to make/wear myself but it stuck in my head. I asked to try it on, it was a bit tight but the idea was good so I traced the shape around the bust and cut out the top just a bit larger, it needed a seam down the back but all good. Then cut off the maxi dress below the bust, cut out the inverse shape on the front of this, sewed the front and the back on, with a gathered bit in the back, and then serged the sides to make it fit the lace bit. Then I sewed some elastic inside using a zig zag stich to give it a drop waist. The original had a higher one but really doesn't suit me so much and the heavy drape of this fabric makes the drop waitst really nice.

Result a lovely stylish, romantic and super comfy dress and a look of surprise from David that something with such unpromising beginnings had turned out so nicely! I'm imagining it in Autumn with my long tan boots. I think it will be a really versatile dress, easy to dress up or down.

Please ignore my strange shaped boobs despite taking 3 pairs of shoes in my basket to the beach (none of which i used) I omitted to take appropriate undergarments as i had it in my head I was wearing a black bra. Rather than have the white straps showing I opted to take the straps off which turned it into a very weird shape. hmm one of those things you may not have noticed but now you will...anyway you get the idea.

I couldn't think of a fancy name for this post, so I put the word fancy in hoping it would make it well..'fancy'. This T shirt is pretty damn fancy as T shirts go. I did not buy the material in the op shop and I did not get it on the reduced rack in Spotlight..oh no.

It was snaffled on a brief visit to Perth in January at Potter's textiles. I don't get to Perth often and very, very rarely on a weekday (when they are open) so it was probably a once in a 5 year thing. Great little shop which you have to look on a map to find, or an iphone. They supply material wholesale to designers, manufactures etc. and, quite recently I think, opened up a little shop for people like us attached to their warehouse/offices.

This knit is a mix of viscose, wool, spandex, maybe a bit of polyester?? can't remember exactly. It is incredibly fine and lightweight and I brought 1 meter of it for about $15. (and of course a heavily reduced 2m of white jersey with some minor imperfection on it). I had planned to buy some nice jersey and to make myself more practical every day things, so it all went pretty well to plan.

I made this. A gathered raglan T shirt, from...you guessed it...Burda Style. This is from feb 13. I test sewed a bit of the fabric on my overlocker and it promptly chewed it to bits. Its pretty ancient and doesn't have a knit setting or anything and I couldn't be bothered to fiddle around. Impatient and undeterred I decided to just sew it on my normal machine. This actually seemed to work ok with a narrow zig zag. I had a couple of slipped stiches but not many considering how fine and slippy the fabric is.

it was almost as long as a dress though, albeit a short one, so I was wondering what to do and whether to cut some off when I kind of gathered it around my waist. This looked like a good solution so I just sewed some elastic into the sides at the bottom to pull it up. I could have done with a bit of a longer bit of elastic to go to nearer my waist but it works. I left the hem raw.

Pluses:

Sewed it up in a night.

I really like the gathered raglan sleeve detail.

The material is so comfortable. Light, stretchy - definitely worth the money!

My husband really likes it and couldn't believe I made it.

It goes great with my skinny jeans and I have worn it lots.

Minuses:

Its longer than I would normally wear, and a bit clingy meaning that, after too many cakes at christmas, I feel better wearing it with a belt. It gives me a reason to wear my nice belt though. I would make a shorter one next time.

Because it looks like I could have brought it from a fancy t shirt shop no one imagines I might have made it. So no compliments. Then again that might just be because.... really.... its just a grey t shirt!

So today a trip to the beach with a basket of clothes and a husband with a camera for a small photo shoot. More to follow over the next few days.

Little bit crinkly due to one day at work!

These shorts were were not what I envisaged making from this fabric and are really a bit of a departure for me style wise but I'm really pleased with them. They are this 'Pleated Shorts' pattern from Burda 02/13. I had been eyeing the fabric up in Spotlight for ages (its a japanese seersucker apparently- stretchy woven, strange weave but not like seersucker). They had it in a few colours- green, orange, yellow - very 70's. Anyway I managed to get to Spotlight in Bunbury just before christmas, my 1st visit since moving from Albany in August. Needless to say I got in a bit of a sweat running around with fabric under my arms, trying to put lots back .. I think I had a felt holly garland fabric thing going on at the same time. Happy days this fabric was now less than half price and I splashed out $18 on 3 meters. Still planning to make the tunic from September Burda with the rest..and Skye has requested some shorts for her too.. think I have enough.

So the shorts - cut out a 12, serged, interfaced the waist (left this step out on the last and only other pair of shorts I have made and it rendered them unwearable) sewed, let them out a bit around the waist, congratulated myself at their good fit and my insertion of an invisible zip. Wore them to work the next day - not really the best move due to torrential rain but I had finished them the day before so you have to don't you.

Good things:

the funky stretchy material.

Its a nice cut, I was worried the pleats would just make them too big but they don't.

The pockets - super easy to slip your hand in, much better than inseam ones.

Less good:

Well I still haven't made any bottom half things with a front fly and I kind of want to (but don't which is why I haven't).

The side invisible zip is really fine but I have to breathe in and yank carefully to get it onto the waist band.

Maybe summers nearly over and I won't get the chance to wear them too much.

The top - I made this one about a year ago but never wrote about it so thought I would kill 2 birds with one of those proverbial stones and get them together.
Its great I really like it and have worn it lots. Not brilliantly made but its heavyweight cotton spandex - stretchy but holds you in place. I only had enough material for 3/4 sleeves but I think they make it more versatile. if you are making this I would definitely recommend using a spandex knit as with all the wraps around I think it could all go saggy in a strange way if you didn't. Its this pattern again from Burda.
So when I saw this lovely lion print I couldn't resist buying some and I made this little playsuit.
The adult patterns are all very boxy, and well 80's ish but there are some baby patterns that are sweet (boxy too but babies are relatively square things ..... with very rounded edges).

Its got little frills of navy linen at the bottom of the legs and buttons down the front. I think she looks very cute in it especially with her little blue shoes. I managed to get some good shots sitting down but she doesn't stand still long so those ones are a bit blurry as she tottered past!

You also get a bit of a sighting of another present I made for my 2 girls for Christmas.

A teepee!

This was very easy to make out of a single sheet. ( I love the flowers and the butterflies on this one - perfect for a garden tent). Basically you cut it into 3 triangles and 2 half triangles (which are at the ends) using all the material. Then sew up the sides! Easy.

You could sew the sides together and then make a tube for the poles by sewing a bit further in. I decided to add contrast tubes for the poles so just sewed the 4 bits of fabric on each seam. These tubes are closed off at the bottom so the poles don't slide out.

The selvedge means you don't have to hem it and as the ends of the sheet are already hemmed I just sewed a bit of contrast at the top to join them together, added some ties and did a long strip to tie the poles together at the top.

It worked pretty well. Initially it was a bit tricky to keep the poles all the way in. I thought the tension from the shape and the tie around the top would do it but once I put little screws in the top to attach the material to the poles it worked much better. I am sure there might be a better way to do this, please let me know if you know. Its also not very resistant to strong winds, I think pegs might solve this but as we are not really planning on camping out in storm conditions (well not in this one atleast) I haven't added any loops for them.

I had been meaning to make them a tepee for about a year so very pleased that I finally managed to do it and not make a dress! Back to grown up sewing for a bit though now.

Amazing, no scraps atall. Pretty good for me..... for whom the fabric always comes first so is rarely the right amount for a pattern.

Anyway it and the shorts are from Burda 05/12. Really cute little girls patterns. I adapted it a bit as I didn't want an opening all the way down the back and got myself in a bit of a mess finishing all the yoke neatly. It turned out ok but not perfect. And really I am less fussy with little people's clothes because they will not be wearing them for that long and in 5 minutes they will be covered with food, mud etc. anyway!

I've made 3 pairs of these little shorts for her now too. They are just great..... complete with pockets to fill with collections. The 1st 2 pairs with elastic at the bottom too and then these ones from one of their Dad's old shirts. (hmm turns out it maybe it wasn't quite as old as I thought but hey its definitely getting more wear now and he seems to have forgiven me! He was away at work, I was clearing out our cupboards ..... what can I say??!).
I am pleased to report that we have not yet worn our outfits on the same day.

I actually quite enjoyed making these. I do like sewing for my little people although generally I am not crazy about making small fiddly things. I think the thought of all the little pattern pieces and short seams and general fiddling really puts me off. Do you enjoy sewing little clothes? Is it just my phobia?

Photos of Layla in her Lion suit to follow, and maybe Skye's other shorts and nice top. Not a very good phobia I guess if I still manage to make them a few things.Lucy Leggethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13104866158508481940noreply@blogger.com1
